Nurse Practitioner Program
Expanding the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in HIV care presents an opportunity to increase the provincial capacity to prevent new HIV infections and to improve access to treatment for HIV infected individuals, particularly in areas with underserved populations. To support the expansion of NPs’ role, the BC College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP; formerly CRNBC) and the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) Clinical Education and Training Program collaborated to update prescribing standards and to establish education requirements for nurse practitioners for HIV prevention and the treatment of people living with HIV (PLHIV).
The Nurse Practitioner Training in HIV Prevention and Treatment program is a tiered program:
Tier 1: Treatment for HIV Prevention (PEP/PrEP prescription), and
Tier 2: Treatment for PLHIV (ARV Initiation and Management)
On successful completion of Tier 1, Treatment for HIV Prevention, NPs will have exhibited competencies and qualifications to prescribe and monitor antiretrovirals (ARVs) for HIV prevention. NPs who have completed Tier 1 may proceed to Tier 2, Treatment for PLHIV; on completion NPs will have exhibited competencies and qualifications to prescribe and monitor ARVs for HIV treatment.
